Address types
Stable exposes two types of address:
- Virtual address (CMRA address): a real street address used to receive routine business mail.
- Registered Agent address: a registered agent service in a single state. Stable can act as registered agent for your business entity and receives official notices at this address.
Both address types are created via Create a location. See Location codes to understand how to create each type of location.
Differences
Virtual address (cmra) | Registered agent address (registeredAgent) | |
|---|---|---|
| Use case | You or your customers receive business mail at a real street address. | A business entity that needs a registered agent service in a single state. Should not be used for routine business mail. |
| Mail (USPS 1583) authorization | Required before Stable opens and scans mail. | Not used. |
| Linked business entity | Not used. | Required (companyId) |
| Scanning behavior | autoScan can be set on the Locations, or scans can be programmatically requested. | autoScan must be set to true when the Locations are created. |
Telling CMRA and registered agent locations apart
After creation, you can distinguish a CMRA location from a registered agent location by reading the type field on the returned Location object:
type: "cmra": a CMRA location, created via a CMRA code (e.g.SFO1).type: "registeredAgent": a registered agent location, created via a state code (e.g.WY).
