Filings
Overview
A Filing is an official document Stable submits to a government agency on behalf of a Company. Most Filings go to a state's filing office, such as the Secretary of State. Some go to local agencies or to federal agencies, such as an EIN application to the IRS.
To order a Filing, you need to decide these things:
- The Company to file for, and the jurisdiction (i.e. state) to file in.
- The Filing Type: the kind of document to file, such as an amendment.
- The Filing Speed: how fast Stable processes the Filing.
Once you've provided these options, you can retrieve the cost to file and the fields required for the specific Filing. You may need to collect these details from a user by presenting a form.
You can place the Filing order and monitor its status via the API. See Order a State Filing for an example.
Stable platform partners may also offer a white-labeled Filings product to their end users. See Stable for Platforms to learn more.
Filing Types
A Filing Type is the kind of document being filed, such as Certificate of Good Standing, Change of Agent, or EIN / Tax ID. Stable's offering includes 15+ Filing Types. See List filing types for more information.
Filing Speeds
A Filing Speed is how fast Stable processes the Filing. There are three:
standard: offered for every Filing Type.expeditedandrush: offered for specific Filing Types and agencies.
A faster Speed can include buying an expedited service from the agency, which is reflected in the agency fee. Stable's Filing Speed names don't always match the names the agency uses for its own service tiers and may not match the exact service tier we use when placing the order.
Use the List filing speeds API to see which Speeds are available.
Filing Fees
Each Filing Speed incurs two fees:
filingFee: Stable's fee for processing the Filing.agencyFee: the agency's fee, which varies with the selected Speed.
When you place a Filing, Stable charges both fees to your account.
Fields
Each Filing Speed returns fields: the information the agency needs that Stable doesn't already have. An empty fields array means the Filing needs nothing beyond the Company itself.
Fields change with the state, the Filing Type, the Filing Speed, and the Company's entity type. See Order a State Filing for a demonstration of how to handle and collect these fields or Retrieve a filing type at a selected speed for a reference of the possible field types.
